Luca Curci talks with Ayuna during the 17th edition of VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2023, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.
Artist Ayuna says that human beings might be empowered to live again due to inevitable moments. She experienced such a moment when she saw something extremely beautiful. One day, she suffered inescapable and cruel violence. She recalls, “Lolling out the window, I watched leaves. Their swaying in the breeze was too beautiful. The sound of the leaves being shaken by the breeze resembled that of the wave approaching the seaside. That insignificant scene pierced my mind, weaving itself into my being. I felt that I would live a little longer. So, I seem to trust the beautiful moment. I would like to inspire those who see my work with such visual aesthetics. And if the viewer should get encouraged through my work, I could not be happier”. In the process of remodelling her self-ego anew out of necessity, Ayuna discovered the first persona, ‘A’. She thought that a human being makes layers of memory naturally while living and sometimes that they array the memory materials appropriately in a new environment. The form of the memory is not maintained as a single scene but arrayed several times in life. Through such a process, one’s ego would attempt to grow and change once again. Ayuna has pulled out the fossilized memory among those recorded in her soul to make a new persona and has subjected it to a creative process. Her growth background would influence the discovery of the persona ‘A’. It was a strong will to survive the defenceless violence. Her persona ‘A’ has a will strong enough to survive in any world. She consequently created a series of personas, “White Hair”, “Shell”, etc., that she brings sequentially to her works, expressing love, hope, life, and regeneration.
Ayuna guides the people into her works through personas. In addition, she expresses the nature that exists as it is, that natural process of winding and unwinding, and the weak and the strong in an effort to make a barrier against the violence she got through. Through such a process, she would save herself. She also wishes that somebody who views her works would be empowered to live in this violent world. LUCA CURCI – What is art for you?
AYUNA – For me, art speaks to us in the most universal and egalitarian language, allowing us to look at a subject from a new perspective, freeing us from our preconceptions. Art also lifts the veil of night when we are in darkness to face the truth. Even the truths we want to run away from, the truths we don’t want to meet, can eventually be embraced. Art has that gentle but strong power.
LC – What are you currently working on?
A – I am mainly working on paintings. I prefer to focus on a single message or topic and expand on the idea by finding related references. When I want to tell a story about a topic in more detail, I use a stop-motion animation drawing format, or I work on art directing photography.
LC – In your opinion what role does an artist play in society and contemporary art?
A – Art has always been a catalyst in society, inspiring new thoughts and contemplation, which have helped humanity move forward in a better way. The values that stem from the development of culture, permeating our daily lives and enabling us to live as human beings, originate from art. It is the role of artists to raise the question of ‘how should we live in the end?’.
LC – What’s your background? What’s an experience that influenced your work the most?
A – My childhood was cruel and painful and I found solace in nature. I survived through nature and that is why my work is closely tied to it. I believe we can learn from nature’s cycles of life and death that revival is always possible. I believe that we already have the power within us to restore and revive as a part of nature, so if we determine to wield the power that itself is to take the first step to save ourselves. As a part of nature, we already have the power to restore and revive inside ourselves when we determine to move forward that is the start of saving ourselves.
LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
A – Yes, as I mentioned before, when we tune into nature, we find the capacity to embrace change, be open to new experiences more flexibly, and grow. All life in nature has the power to rebound from any challenge, and this resilience never diminishes. I want us to remember and learn that resilience and vitality from nature. If we do so, we will save ourselves in this violent world. Everything that has life in it creates its own life, and that, in itself, is beauty. I invite the viewers into my artwork and deliver the message through the personae.
LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
A – I am an artist who expresses art through the body. The universe, the body and space, identity, the boundaries between skin and skin, spirits, souls, all of those are things I believe in and I am very happy to be able to exhibit my works with integrity. I want us to listen to nature, to realize once again we are living all together on Earth, and to care for all that has life.
LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
A – I think the ITSLIQUID Platform is a platform that has already come a long way and has unlimited growth potential. It has a well-developed system that gives artists opportunities and suggests different directions or showings. It is a great place for artists to expand their horizons, and for collectors too!
LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
A – Yes, absolutely. It has been a great opportunity for me to reflect on what I have done so far, and I think this partnership will allow me to develop further in the future. Even just imagining the future is delightful, and I hope working together with me remains a delightful memory for you as well. I hope that we will continue to have a great relationship in the future.
